OTHER: Olive Trees are grown both for their ornamental beauty & for their edible olives. Olives have been cultivated for over 6000 years, & are grown on a large commercial scale today for eating olives & olive oil.
Olive Trees become smothered in lovely fragrant flowers in the summer, on top of their 1 – 3” silvery evergreen leaves. These plants are not picky about their soil, & can grow in soil that is nutritionally poor, loose & sandy or heavy clay, & acidic or alkaline, as long as it is a well-drained site in the sun. The Olive Tree is able to tolerate drought as well as coastal conditions such as salt & wind. Canino Olive plants have a good disease & pest resistance, & are more cold hardy than some other types.
Canino is an ancient heirloom Mediterranean olive variety. It is named after the town of Canino, Italy which lies 50 miles north of Rome where these olives have been grown for thousands of years. Canino Olive trees offer a very high yield of olives, & are prized for their superb caliber oil.
Green & black olives come from the same tree. Their coloration is determined by when they are harvested & how they are processed. Green olives are actually unripe, harvested before they fully mature, whereas black olives are either left on the tree to mature to black or are harvested green & processed & cured in brine which turns them black. Canino Olives mature late in the season, typically in December.
Olives are one of the ‘holy trinity’ of basic ingredients in Mediterranean cuisine, & can be enjoyed solo or used in about a zillion recipes. Some favorites include breads, appetizers like bacon olive wraps, dips & spreads, salads, pizzas, pasta, & paired with fish or meats.
Olive oil, extracted from olives, has countless uses of its own. In the kitchen, it can be used uncooked as a salad dressing, as a butter alternative, as a dip for breads, or drizzled over veggies. Olive oil can be the base for or used in the making of dips, sauces, in marinates, with rice or pasta, etc. Of course olive oil is hugely popular for pan-frying, stir-frying, sautéing, & baking for its excellent flavor & health benefits. Out of the kitchen, olive oil is utilized in a wide variety of fashions including as massage oil, for hair & skin care, oodles of home remedies & traditional medicinal uses, for sunburn relief, furniture polish, as a lubricant, & in candle making.
Did you know … ? Olive Trees can live for thousands & thousands of years, continuing to produce their delicious fruit. When you sow an olive seed, you aren’t just planting a tree, you are creating a legacy that will be enjoyed for countless generations to come!

This lovely ornamental was brought to the UK in the 1700s where it has been popular ever since. This shrub has dark green leave that are fuzzy on their underside, and in warmer climates remain evergreen year-round. In cooler climates they are deciduous. The brightly colored, perfectly round flowers are very fragrant and have a wonderful honey scent which attracts bees, birds, & butterflies. When in bloom, the Orange Ball puts on quite a stunning display because of the huge number of flowers that grow in clusters gracing its branches. This Butterfly Bush is very tolerant of most soil conditions including clay, sand, chalk, & loam. It also tolerates coastal conditions such as high winds and salt, and many have said it can also grow in partial shade. These shrubs grow quickly, typically reaching their mature height in 10 years but it is not uncommon for them to grow more quickly. The Dragon Tree is fairly slow growing, having a single trunk for the first 10 - 15 years of its life before branching out. Once they begin branching out, the branches will continue to split every 10 – 15 years. These long lived trees can survive for hundreds of years, repeating this process over & over to form an intricately patterned umbrella shape. While their average height is 15 – 25’, these trees can grow to be well over 25’ in time, & often develop aerial roots with age.
The foliage of this evergreen succulent is blue-green in color, & the sword-shaped leaves reach 2’ long. The Dragon Tree’s bark starts out smooth, becoming red-striped & scaly over time. If the leaves or bark are cut, they ooze a red resin called “Dragon’s Blood”, which has several traditional medicinal uses. The seeds may be poisonous - do not eat them. This red sap has also been used as a varnish & colorant since ancient times.
Depending on the climate it is grown it, the Dragon Tree’s fragrant blooms will appear between late winter & early summer. As the seasons progress, the flowers will turn to lovely coral colored berries. Being an island native, Dragon Trees are well suited to growing in the salty & windy conditions of coastal regions. OTHER: The Flowering Almond, a stunningly beautiful ornamental shrub to small tree, is originally native to China but has become immensely popular around the world. It makes a wonderful addition to any garden or as a stand alone specimen. They take well to pruning, with pruning promoting heavier blooming, & can be trained into a single-trunked small tree versus their natural 'round' form if you prefer. They also make an excellent bonsai specimen. Due to their somewhat small stature (& ability to be pruned to a smaller size if desired) & their extreme cold tolerance, the Flowering Almond is also a good patio / container plant. Flowering Almonds are able to grow well in part shade, but will fruit better in full sun. They prefer moist but well-drained soil.
Blooming very early in the spring before the leaves appear, the branches of your Flowering Almond will be absolutely covered in a multitude of double pink blossoms that resemble roses. The blooms are delightfully fragrant, & will attract bees & butterflies. By the summer, the flowers will have given way to showy bright red 1/2" berries that are adored by birds, squirrels, & other woodland friends. The Flowering Almond's leaves turn lovely shades of bronze & yellow in fall providing another season of beauty for you to enjoy.

Birds & other small critters like to eat the berries, & the trees provide nesting habitat. The Madrone was utilized by Native Americans for traditional medicinal uses. The tree’s hard wood is great for firewood because it is long burning, but I just can’t imagine doing so! The trunk of this tree is extraordinarily beautiful! The Madrone’s bark is a lovely orange-red, & at maturity, the bark naturally peels off the tree, revealing the lovely colors beneath. It has a silvery smooth satin sheen that is beyond comparison!
