Malagueta Pepper Seeds from $4.25
A small, tapered firecracker pepper that slowly builds up heat as you eat it! Malaguetas are a staple in Brazil, Mozambique, and Portugal, and it is a very popular chili. Just don’t get it confused with the name, as its name comes from an unrelated spice in West Africa called the “melegeuta.” The Malagueta produces a bushy, dense plant that reaches 2-3 ft. tall and produces many small peppers that measure about 1-2" in length. Peppers are elongated and have a conical shape that tapers off to a point. Watch as they ripen from green to their bright red at maturity. The Malagueta pepper has a fruity aroma when you smell it, and then has a sweet, citrus yet bitter flavor when you take a bite. The pepper has multiple names where the small pepper goes by Piri Piri in Mozambique and Portugal, and they are widely used in sauces, salsas, and poultry dishes. Lipstick Pepper Seeds from $4.25
Looking for a juicy sweet pepper to grow in a cooler climate? Lipstick peppers are rumored to be named for their elongated shapes and vibrant red color which looks like the appearance of the famous cosmetic item. Favored for their thick flesh and sweet flavor, these peppers are great to use as a culinary ingredient! The Lipstick pepper is a variety of Pimento pepper, which is a non-spicy cultivar that is known to have one of the lowest Scoville ratings of any pepper. The Lipstick pepper plant was developed as a cold-tolerant variety for cold regions, and they’re dependable and extremely heavy producers. The peppers will grow to 4 inches long with a crisp, crunchy flesh and smooth, taut, shiny skin. Ripening from green to bright red, they will form cone-shaped or heart-shaped pods with tapered ends. With peppers maturing to just 70 days, they will be ready to harvest early, especially in areas with cooler summers. The Lipstick pepper is an excellent pepper to grow for those who live in shorter warm seasons, and to cook in the kitchen! The red heirloom is a favorite for gardeners and foodies because of its extra-sweet, fruity flavors and aromatic smells of earthy, vegetal scents when sliced open. They are excellent to eat raw, and for cooked applications like roasting, frying, and baking. Lipstick peppers are great for stuffed peppers, sauces, salsas, relishes, and salads, but we recommend you roast them to compliment aged cheese, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, and a variety of meat like beef, lamb, goat, pork, and shellfish. Purple De Milpa Tomatillo Seeds $4.25
If you want to grow a highly unique, colorful tomatillo variety, you cannot miss out on the striking Purple de Milpa Tomatillo! In Mexico, these tomatillos grow freely in cornfields and are harvested for personal use and for selling in town. The word Milpa is translated into “cultivated field,” and is known as a crop-growing system used throughout Mesoamerica. These tomatillos have a sharp flavor preferred by some cooks over other varieties, and are delicious roasted, stewed, in salsas, salads, and sandwiches. The Mexican heirloom variety produces very small, ¾” purple-tinted tomatillos that grow on 3-4" tall plants. This will ripen from green to purple and is known to grow like a weed with little care. They will grow best in warm weather with sun and requires warm soil for germination. Similar to tomatoes, they are drought tolerant and will do well in containers and pots if you live somewhere with a short outdoor growing season. This is native to Mexico, so they are not frost tolerant. They can germinate within 7-10 days and takes 70-90 days to harvest. Rooster Spur Pepper Seeds from $4.25
Rooster Spur peppers were known for their elusiveness back in the 1970s when then-President Jimmy Carter tried seeking out these peppers after being gifted with this pepper-infused summer sausage. Today, Rooster Spur peppers are grown worldwide and take on many different names – in Japan, for example, they go by the name Takanotsume peppers, or “hawk claw” peppers. These pepper plants will rise to 2 ft. in height, bearing many of these 2” long fruits. The Rooster Spur gets its namesake from its shape. Small, slim, and curved just like Thai peppers, they look just like the spurs roosters use to fend off their enemies. Peppers will mature from green to dark red. While these plants are used ornamentally, Rooster Spur peppers are very much edible. Just like their talons, however, these peppers pack a lot of piercing heat for the size that they are! Their thin walls work great for drying into chili powder – try this out instead of Cayenne or Tabasco peppers! This variety of spinach is highly prized for its adaptability, vigorous growth, and delectable taste. Whether you are a home gardener or a small-scale farmer, Verdil spinach is an excellent addition to your garden, offering both aesthetic appeal and culinary versatility. Appearance of Verdil Spinach Verdil spinach plants are characterized by their striking dark green leaves, which are smooth and glossy, giving them a lush and healthy appearance. The leaves are broad and slightly crinkled, creating an attractive rosette that makes this spinach variety stand out in any garden. The plants typically reach a height of about 6 to 8 inches and spread out to form a dense, compact growth habit. One of the distinguishing features of Verdil spinach is its sturdy stems, which support the large, tender leaves. This makes the plant less prone to damage from handling and harvesting, ensuring that you can enjoy fresh spinach leaves throughout the growing season. Growing Verdil Spinach Organic Verdil spinach seeds are ideal for both spring and fall planting, as this variety thrives in cooler temperatures. To achieve the best results, sow the seeds directly in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Spinach prefers a location that receives full sun to partial shade, allowing the plants to develop their full flavor and lush foliage. Before planting, prepare the soil by incorporating compost or aged manure to enhance its fertility. Sow the seeds about ¬Ω inch deep and space them approximately 1 inch apart in rows that are 12 to 18 inches apart. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to a spacing of 4 to 6 inches to provide ample room for growth. Verdil spinach is known for its fast growth rate, typically maturing in about 40 to 50 days. Regular watering is essential to keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Mulching around the plants helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, contributing to healthier growth. Harvesting and Taste The best time to harvest Verdil spinach is when the leaves are tender and have reached their full size, usually when they are about 3 to 4 inches long. Harvest the outer leaves first, allowing the inner leaves to continue growing for subsequent harvests. Alternatively, you can cut the entire plant at the base if you prefer a larger, one-time harvest. Verdil spinach is renowned for its mild, sweet flavor, which is less bitter than many other spinach varieties. The tender leaves are perfect for fresh salads, adding a burst of green and a pleasant taste to any dish. When cooked, Verdil spinach retains its vibrant color and texture, making it an excellent ingredient for saut√©s, soups, and casseroles. Benefits for the Garden In addition to its culinary uses, Verdil spinach is a valuable plant for the garden ecosystem. Its dense foliage helps suppress weeds, and as a cool-season crop, it can be planted as a succession crop in rotation with other vegetables. This practice not only maximizes garden productivity but also helps maintain soil health. Organic Verdil spinach seeds are a must-have for gardeners seeking a reliable, flavorful, and attractive leafy green. With its glossy, dark green leaves, mild taste, and easy cultivation, Verdil spinach is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. By following simple planting and care guidelines, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of this delightful spinach variety throughout the growing season.
