OTHER: This plant gets its most common name, Arrowhead, because of its 10” long arrowhead shaped leaves. But why the nickname ‘Indian Potato’ you ask? The egg-shaped rhizomes are edible & were a popular food source for the Native American Indians. They can be cooked & enjoyed just like potatoes. And duck potato? Arrowhead is also an important food source for ducks & other waterfowl. These plants do require moist conditions, & grow well in ponds, bogs, or water gardens. If they are left alone and are not crowded out by other more aggressive water plants, they will fill in a bit, but if you do not wish for them to spread at all, simply place them in the water in pots. In warmer climates, the Arrowhead can bloom year round.

It gets its nickname ‘Cellophane Plant’ because the leaves can be somewhat transparent like cellophane. The plants also flower, & these turn into interesting burr shaped seed pods.
The plants can be grown outdoors in wetlands & freshwater marshlands, or they can be completely submerged in water. They can be used indoors as an underwater aquarium plant, or outdoors in ponds in sub-tropical to tropical areas.

The plants tolerates some dryness & do not mind coastal conditions like salt air. In cooler climates, Pineapple Guavas can be grown in containers & brought indoors to overwinter. The huge showy flowers have two-tone pink & white petals that are filled by bright red stamens with golden tips. The flower petals are indeed edible, & they have a sweet tropical flavor with a hint of cinnamon spice. The flowers are most commonly used in salads. Tres chic! Removing the petals does not hurt the plants fruiting ability. Birds like to eat the flowers too!
In fall, the bushes will be fragrant with 3" oval green fruit. The Pineapple Guava is not a true guava, but they are related. Pineapple Guavas have sweet white flesh that tastes like a heavenly combination of pineapple, apple, strawberry, guava, & mint. The fruit also has a texture like a guava, more so nearer to the skin. The center is more gelatinous & clear when they are fully ripe. They are commonly eaten fresh with a spoon right out of the skin. OTHER: The lovely blooms of the Plumeria appear on shrubs and small trees with widely spaced thick succulent branches. Each of the separate species of Plumeria bears differently shaped leaves with distinct form and growth habits. Some leaves are quite narrow and corrugated and others are an elongated shape and glossy dark-green color. The everblooming types have evergreen leaves. Plumeria is native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America as far south as Brazil but have been spread throughout the world's tropics. In several Pacific islands, such as Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa, Hawaii, New Zealand, Tonga, and in the Cook Islands Plumeria species are used for making leis.
Plumeria flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. The flowers have no nectar, and simply dupe their pollinators. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar. The delicious Plumeria fragrance is loved worldwide and Indian incenses containing Plumeria have "Champa" in their name, for example Nag Champa.
In colder climates Plumerias should be grown in containers. They make beautiful potted plants for the patio or greenhouse. In milder climates, plumeria can be grown outdoors in the ground, where they may be a small beautiful landscape trees. When temperatures dip into the low 40's they may be stored in their containers or uprooted carefully trying to take as much root as possible and stored over winter in a heated basement or garage where temperatures are kept above freezing. As soon as temperatures rise outdoors they can be brought out and planted again. They will resume growth, leaf out and begin to grow as if nothing happened. The real payoff comes during the early summer through the early fall months, when very fragrant clusters of showy, waxy flowers provide the makings for your own Hawaiian Lei. There is absolutely nothing like the sweet fragrance of Plumeria in flower, with fragrances of jasmine, citrus, spices, gardenia, and other indescribable scents. These flowers are treasured by the Polynesian Islanders for their durability, fragrances and colors of whites, yellows, pinks, reds, and multiple pastels. Flowering can last up to 3 months at a time producing new blooms everyday. Once picked, a bloom can last for several days without wilting if kept in water.

As the seasons progress, the flowers turn to large seed pods that start out green & mature to brown, & the seed pods can be nearly 24” long.
Royal Poinciana Trees are fast growing, gaining up to 5’ a year. Their umbrella-like crowns can spread up to 60’ wide, making them a popular shade tree. The Poinciana is also a legume, so can help fix the nitrogen in the soil to make it more fertile. These trees are able to tolerate pollution so make a great street tree, & are able to tolerate coastal conditions such as salt & wind, & they tolerate drought well. They prefer soil that is sandy or loose, & have a tough time in heavy or clay soils. This heirloom species is one of the oldest cultivated plants & is both a parent plant & rootstock provider for many Asian persimmon trees. The trees grow at a medium rate, & have glossy green leaves. They are able to grow in most soils including heavy clay & rocky soils.
Spring flowers develop into fruit as the seasons progress. The fruit starts out yellow & turns orange to red & deeper purplish tones as it ages. The mature fruits typically measure between ½” & ¾”. The ancient Greeks dubbed it “God’s Fruit”, but a more useful descriptive nickname is The Date Plum, because the fruit tastes like a cross between a date & a plum. These Persimmons can be enjoyed as a juicy fresh fruit raw off the tree, dried, or made into jams & countless other delicious treats. The fruit contains lots of sugars and vitamins, & allowing the fruit to go through a frost or drying it brings out its natural sweetness. The Italian Persimmon is dioecious, but female trees will still produce seedless fruit without a male tree present.

The tree’s hard wood is great for firewood because it is long burning, but I just can’t imagine doing so! The trunk of this tree is extraordinarily beautiful! The Madrone’s bark is a lovely orange-red, & at maturity, the bark naturally peels off the tree, revealing the lovely colors beneath. It has a silvery smooth satin sheen that is beyond comparison!

OTHER: The Flowering Almond, a stunningly beautiful ornamental shrub to small tree, is originally native to China but has become immensely popular around the world. It makes a wonderful addition to any garden or as a stand alone specimen. They take well to pruning, with pruning promoting heavier blooming, & can be trained into a single-trunked small tree versus their natural 'round' form if you prefer. They also make an excellent bonsai specimen. Due to their somewhat small stature (& ability to be pruned to a smaller size if desired) & their extreme cold tolerance, the Flowering Almond is also a good patio / container plant. Flowering Almonds are able to grow well in part shade, but will fruit better in full sun. They prefer moist but well-drained soil.
Blooming very early in the spring before the leaves appear, the branches of your Flowering Almond will be absolutely covered in a multitude of double pink blossoms that resemble roses. The blooms are delightfully fragrant, & will attract bees & butterflies. By the summer, the flowers will have given way to showy bright red 1/2" berries that are adored by birds, squirrels, & other woodland friends. The Flowering Almond's leaves turn lovely shades of bronze & yellow in fall providing another season of beauty for you to enjoy.
