The Dragon Tree is fairly slow growing, having a single trunk for the first 10 - 15 years of its life before branching out. Once they begin branching out, the branches will continue to split every 10 – 15 years. These long lived trees can survive for hundreds of years, repeating this process over & over to form an intricately patterned umbrella shape. While their average height is 15 – 25’, these trees can grow to be well over 25’ in time, & often develop aerial roots with age.
The foliage of this evergreen succulent is blue-green in color, & the sword-shaped leaves reach 2’ long. The Dragon Tree’s bark starts out smooth, becoming red-striped & scaly over time. If the leaves or bark are cut, they ooze a red resin called “Dragon’s Blood”, which has several traditional medicinal uses. The seeds may be poisonous - do not eat them. This red sap has also been used as a varnish & colorant since ancient times.
Depending on the climate it is grown it, the Dragon Tree’s fragrant blooms will appear between late winter & early summer. As the seasons progress, the flowers will turn to lovely coral colored berries. Being an island native, Dragon Trees are well suited to growing in the salty & windy conditions of coastal regions. They are also quite drought tolerant.
The Dragon Tree is listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature List of Threatened Species Red List as Vulnerable, & it is a protected species in some places.

These miniature palms trees are slow growing, reaching an average of 6 -10’ tall outdoors. Indoors, they typically only grow to about 4 - 5’ tall making these pest resistant plants a wonderful selection for a container or house plant.
These palms have a single trunk, but are often planted in groups, sometimes so close together it appears as though it’s a multi-trunked tree. As they mature, leaf scars will be left on the trunk making a beautiful pattern, & with age also comes aerial roots. This dwarf has evergreen foliage with 2 – 4’ long fronds that form an arching canopy that extends to 5 – 7’ wide. They have spines near base of the leaves by the trunk. The plants are dioecious, & if pollinated, the female trees’ 1’ long panicles of cream spring flowers turn to edible fruit by fall. OTHER: Olive Trees are grown both for their ornamental beauty & for their edible olives. Olives have been cultivated for over 6000 years, & are grown on a large commercial scale today for eating olives & olive oil.
Olive Trees become smothered in lovely fragrant flowers in the summer, on top of their 1 – 3” silvery evergreen leaves. These plants are not picky about their soil, & can grow in soil that is nutritionally poor, loose & sandy or heavy clay, & acidic or alkaline, as long as it is a well-drained site in the sun. The Olive Tree is able to tolerate drought as well as coastal conditions such as salt & wind. Canino Olive plants have a good disease & pest resistance, & are more cold hardy than some other types.
Canino is an ancient heirloom Mediterranean olive variety. It is named after the town of Canino, Italy which lies 50 miles north of Rome where these olives have been grown for thousands of years. Canino Olive trees offer a very high yield of olives, & are prized for their superb caliber oil.
Green & black olives come from the same tree. Their coloration is determined by when they are harvested & how they are processed. Green olives are actually unripe, harvested before they fully mature, whereas black olives are either left on the tree to mature to black or are harvested green & processed & cured in brine which turns them black. Canino Olives mature late in the season, typically in December.
Olives are one of the ‘holy trinity’ of basic ingredients in Mediterranean cuisine, & can be enjoyed solo or used in about a zillion recipes. Some favorites include breads, appetizers like bacon olive wraps, dips & spreads, salads, pizzas, pasta, & paired with fish or meats.
Olive oil, extracted from olives, has countless uses of its own. In the kitchen, it can be used uncooked as a salad dressing, as a butter alternative, as a dip for breads, or drizzled over veggies. Olive oil can be the base for or used in the making of dips, sauces, in marinates, with rice or pasta, etc. Of course olive oil is hugely popular for pan-frying, stir-frying, sautéing, & baking for its excellent flavor & health benefits. Out of the kitchen, olive oil is utilized in a wide variety of fashions including as massage oil, for hair & skin care, oodles of home remedies & traditional medicinal uses, for sunburn relief, furniture polish, as a lubricant, & in candle making.
Did you know … ? Olive Trees can live for thousands & thousands of years, continuing to produce their delicious fruit. When you sow an olive seed, you aren’t just planting a tree, you are creating a legacy that will be enjoyed for countless generations to come!

OTHER: Himalayan Dogwoods are a lovely ornamental flowering tree that also produces attractive edible fruit. They are native to the Himalayas & surrounding areas, & have also been naturalized in Australia, New Zealand, & more. Fragrant flowers cover the tree in spring, blooming in lovely shades of white changing to pink. As the summer heats up, the flowers turn into pinkish red 1” fruits that mature by fall. The fruit grows in clusters of roundish bumpy fruits that appear similar to strawberries, hence their other name Himalayan Strawberry Tree. The fruit can be eaten raw or cooked, made into preserves, used in pies, & more. They range somewhere between bitter & sweet & are said to taste something like an over-ripe banana. Birds love to eat them!
The Himalayan Dogwood is evergreen to semi-evergreen, & its large thick 5” leaves are fuzzy on the underside. Green in the summer, they turn lovely shades of bronze, red, & purple in the fall. The trees are able to tolerate coastal conditions, & are not too picky about their soil. They are able to grow in sandy or heavier clay soils. They grow fairly quickly, averaging about 3’ a year, & are deer resistant.
